  1. Mix sugar, shortening, flour, eggs, milk, cloves, jam, raisins or nuts, baking soda and allspice together. Pour into a 9x13-inch cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Top with brown sugar icing. Brown Sugar Icing: Cook butter, milk, vanilla, brown sugar, coconut and nuts together on the stovetop until thick.
