Special Olympics Illinois Winter Games @ Chestnut Mountain Resort

State competition for Special Olympics Illinois in alpine skiing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Kick off the event with opening ceremonies and parade in downtown Galena, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Approximately 400 athletes will compete in this 3-day event and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.

It’s not often you get to feel like you’re flying. This flat, fast course winds throughout the stunning Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, including areas typically reserved for eagles alone. The course features pavement sections and trips down back roads, always accompanied by plenty of water stations.

Maple Festival @ Touch of Nature Environmental Center

A free educational family-fun event to learn the history and process of making maple syrup formthe woods to the kitchen. Includes maple syrup demos, tree identification hikes and a home-cooked pancake breakfast. Also features blacksmith, hide tanning, silk embroidery, furniture making and more from local artisans and vendors.

Birds of a Feather @ Cache River Wetlands Center

Birds can be identified in a variety of ways. Some people can hear bird songs and know which bird is singing. Other birds can be identified by shape, size or the appearance of their beak. For some birds, though, their feathers tell it all. Because birds have feathers, they can fly, stay dry when it rains, stay warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s hot. During this brief program, we will take a look at those miraculous things that make birds, birds – feathers!
