Balloons Over Mt. Vernon & Fly-in October 16-18, 2015 will feature18 hot air balloons and warbirds. Friday evening will kick off with the United Way Balloon Glow. Saturday will begin with the “Run with the Balloons” sponsored by the YMCA of Jefferson County. The US Bank Duck Drop hot air balloon flight will take place Saturday morning. The United Way of South Central Illinois will host a Pancake breakfast. P51 Mustang rides will be for sale all weekend. Tri-County Electric Co-op is sponsoring an aviation education zone. Come check out a remote control hot air balloon, flight simulators, and much more. Other events occurring through out the day will be a PV2 Harpoon on display, Waco rides, remote control boats, Veterans Reunion, and other family friendly activities. You never know what will be on the flight line. To finish out the day, Crossroads Hospital is sponsoring a “Survivor” hot air balloon flight. This will recognize “Survivors” who have faced diversity and survived. The weekend will wrap on Sunday morning with a fun Hot Air Balloon flight. There is so much to list, we are sure you won’t want to miss it!
Makanda Vulture Fest will be held Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2015 in downtown Makanda.
Each fall, vultures fly over Makanda and the surrounding areas and signal the beginning of fall and the arrival of the incredible fall colors of Makanda and southern Illinois. Vulture Fest features live music, food, shopping, and art by local artists for purchase.

Come join us for a free walking tour featuring a live portrayal of people from Chester’s interesting historic past. Including, but not limited to: political figures, comic book inspirations, and individuals providing glimpses into days long gone. Tours will last approximately one hour, and the last tour leaves at five PM. This event is rain or shine, however in event of heavy rain or severe weather it will be cancelled. White Oaks Mall, a Simon mall, invites ladies to grab a friend and enjoy an evening out at the shopping center’s Ladies Night Out event on Thursday, October 22 from 5 to 7 p.m.
The free event will feature complimentary wine, live music, plus a platform barber show, a totally unique performance experience featuring the talented team of barbers from All Star Kutz giving their guests a fresh style—set to music! Retail vendors, including the Itty Bitty Fashion Truck, a mobile boutique that offers the latest in apparel, jewelry, and accessories for women, will also be on hand. And in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, representatives from Susan G. Komen for the Cure will offer guests educational materials about the disease, and give away door prizes.
Guests can also enjoy gift-with-purchase promotions and special store discounts as well as champagne provided by Michael Kors. In addition, attendees will receive swag bags stuffed with goodies and store coupons.
1st annual craft beer tasting for charity at the Marion VFW. We will have Ruby’s Rousers performing everything from Old Country, Classic rock, 50’s, 60’s and more. 17th Street Barbecue will be providing their world renowned pork products for your enjoyment as well. Anyone that would like to participate and help the veterans in our community are more than welcome to participate. So come out and help grow this event with us.
White Oaks Mall will host Mall-O-Ween, a safe trick-or-treat event, again this year.
Mall-O-Ween is a free event and open to the public. Children can go from store to store gathering candy, and also enjoy face painting, live music, balloon animals, a temporary tattoo parlor, and haunted train rides in Center Court.
Families are encouraged to come dressed in their costumes, though for the comfort of our littlest guests, we request no attendees over the age of 12 wear masks. We also ask that all attendees avoid toy weapons of any kind. A parent or guardian must accompany young children at all times during the event.
