2/3 Cup butter or margarine
2/3 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. vanilla
liquid food coloring as desired
Rainbow sprinkles as desired
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Beat eggs slightly, add butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla and mix well.
Add flour, baking powder and salt and mix well with moist ingredients.
1. For pinwheels Divide dough evenly into as many bowls as you want to have colors. Mix food coloring well into dough.
2. Roll each color of dough evenly into grape size balls.
3. Combine 5 colored balls and quickly roll into a larger ball. It should look like a beachball.
4. Roll that ball between your hands and the counter or cutting board until you have a cylinder about 6 inches long.
5. Starting from one end of the cylinder, roll the dough into a coil, twisting the cylinder as you go.
6. Roll edges of the cookie in sprinkles.
7. Repeat with remaining dough.
8. Bake 8-10 minutes or until done. (fully done middle with the barest touch of golden brown on the edges).
For Christmas cookies I use 2 red and 2 green colored balls and 1 uncolored ball.
NOTE: Can substitute 17.5 oz. Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix.
Mix according to package directions.

I have tried numerous sugar cookie recipes over the years and this one I found to be the absolute best. Sugar cookies are a family tradition for Christmas and for all the holidays our family celebrates.
We can vary this recipe for every holiday. It just wouldn’t seem like Christmas without this absolute family favorite.
