Inventor of the Future: The Visionary Life of Buckminster Fuller
Our newest exhibit, “Here I Have Lived: Home in Illinois,” focuses on the diverse stories of people across the ages who have made Illinois home, along with showing home is more than just a structure. It’s a feeling of belonging and finding a sense of self and community. One person featured in the exhibit was less interested in what home was, but what it could be. In doing so, Buckminster Fuller created the futuristic geodesic dome and was revered as one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th century.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum invites you to join Alec Nevala-Lee for “Inventor of the Future: The Visionary Life of Buckminster Fuller.” With our special display of one of Fuller’s most famous inventions — the Dymaxion Car — serving as the backdrop, the program will happen on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. in the ALPLM museum plaza.
Drawing on meticulous research, dozens of interviews, and thousands of unpublished documents, Nevala-Lee will examine Fuller’s body of work as an architectural designer and futurist, who captured the attention of the both the mainstream and counterculture audiences in the 1960s during his tenure at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. with his groundbreaking designs that he based on a mystical conception of the universe’s geometry. His revolutionary ideas, which were based on a mystical conception of the universe’s geometry, influenced the founders of Silicon Valley, and continue to flourish far and wide from Epcot Center to a molecule named in his honor.
Special note: Museum doors will open at 6:00 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to view the “Here I Have Lived: Home in Illinois” until the program begins.
