Coney Dog

There are strong Coney Dog traditions in Tulsa, Okla., the Midwest and other locations along Route 66.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion finely diced and divided
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 6 all-beef hot dogs
  • 6 buns
  • Yellow mustard

Instructions

  • In a pan over medium heat, brown beef and break up until crumbly. Drain fat.
  • Add 1/2 cup diced onion, tomato paste, chili powder, paprika, cumin and water to the beef and simmer for 20 minutes, until thickened. Add salt, to taste.
  • Grill or boil hot dogs.
  • Place dog in bun, top with coney sauce, onions and mustard.
