Spelling Bee and Old-Fashioned Games at Belden School

Step back in time and have some old-fashioned fun! Bring the kids and learn about the one-room schoolhouse and play some games like they used to in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Volunteer docents are onsite and share stories of the 1859 limestone one-room schoolhouse off Heatherdowns Lane in The Galena Territory. Free but donations appreciated.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, portrayed by Tessa Flak, Director of the Galena – Jo Daviess County Historical Society, will assist in the Second Annual Spelling Bee and old-fashioned tug-of-war at Belden School.

The Spelling Bee is for 8 to 12 year-olds and everyone attending may participate (even adults) in the tug-of-war. Spelling Bee words will be chosen from an old 1800s textbook and students will compete with children from the following age groups: 8 to 10 year olds and 11 to 12 year olds. Refreshments will be served.

The special guest – Tessa Flak, has a vast knowledge of the “little woman on the prairie”. Throughout high school and college, she worked at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Park and Museum in Burr Oak, Iowa, as a tour guide, and volunteered on the board of directors. Later she became the executive director at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society in De Smet, South Dakota.

To participate in the Belden Spelling Bee, please e-mail your child’s name, age, parent or grandparent’s name (person submitting the information), phone number and best email address to reach you by June 30. This information should be e-mailed to: yodergram42@gmail.com.
