Special Evening Performance of The Nature of Freedom: A Literary Commemoration of Juneteenth
Juneteenth marks a historic moment for freedom in America. To celebrate, the ALPLM presents “The Nature of Freedom: A Literary Commemoration of Juneteenth,” which draws from the works of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou and more to discuss freedom’s meaning and price. This is a readers theater production in which the actors present the script without costumes or scenery. They use only their voices to share these powerful ideas. The play is directed by ALPLM actor Reggie Guyton.
The evening performance on Wednesday, June 19 will include Small Beginnings (a one-act play which tells the remarkable story of Robert Smalls, a man who led an enslaved entourage to freedom by way of a bold riverboat escape plan through Confederate waters in 1862), followed by The Nature of Freedom.
Museum doors open 5:30 p.m.
ALPLM’s new exhibit, Solidarity Now!, will remain open until 6:30 p.m.
Theater doors will open at 6:15 p.m.
Small Beginnings at 6:30 p.m., followed by a short Q & A.
Brief Intermission
The Nature of Freedom at 7:00 p.m. (approx. 35-minute performance)
