For the People Speakers Series: The Unfinished Business of the Civil War with Dr. Jeremi Suri

Abraham Lincoln offered a compelling vision of a prosperous, inclusive, and united American nation after the Civil War. His assassination denied the nation the leadership it needed to realize those ideals.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum invites you to join us for the latest edition of the “For the People Speaker Series” with Dr. Jeremi Suri on Thursday, October 12, 2023, from 6:30pm-7:30pm in-person in our Union Theater or virtually via ZOOM.

Dr. Suri will examine the struggles for freedom, justice, and unity in the aftermath of Lincoln’s death. We will see how Lincoln’s legacy continued to guide many reformers, but also how Confederate resistance remained strong and ultimately prevented American democracy from reaching its potential. Learning this history in all of its complexity, Americans today have an opportunity to realize Lincoln’s ideals more fully, and for more citizens. This lecture will draw on the original research from the author’s most recent book, Civil War by Other Means: America’s Long and Unfinished Fight for Democracy.

Educators who attend the event — either in-person or via ZOOM — and complete the required ISBE survey will receive 1.5 CPDUs.

Special Note: after the program, Dr. Suri will have a limited number of copies of his book available for purchase and signing.
