Archeology Day

You’re invited to join the Center for American Archeology in celebrating 70 years of archeology. Spend a day exploring the fascinating 12,000 year history of west central Illinois through fun, hands on activities, informational exhibits and presentations about the current research being done by CAA archeologists. In 2023 we welcome Native American artist, Kimberly Bugg. Kimberely will be demonstrating corn cob dolls and speaking about their history and importance in Native culture. Native American artist, Kathy Dickerson is a member of the Kiowa tribe. She will be demonstrating beadwork and can share information about her leatherwork using traditional methods. Experimental archeologist, Larry Kinsella is a CAA Legacy and is coordinating a dugout canoe making project. He has invited stone tool enthusiasts from around the world to join him in chopping down and shaping a dugout canoe using only stone tools. This project is ongoing during the month and will be a featured part of our annual event. Ceramic artist, Susan Bostwick has been working with an archaeologist to better understand local clay variations. She will be demonstrating a pot firing in an open fire pit. Other demonstrations and hands on activities will include: Tours of the German Site, Basket Weaving, Flintknapping, Pictographs, Finger Weaving, Flotation Sampling, Trap Demonstrations, Friction Fire Making, Spear Throwing, Artifact Washing, Bent Pole Structure, Archeology Skills, Coil Pot Making, Artifact ID, Kids Archeology Lab and more! This project is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Two Rivers Arts Council
