Holiday Fruitcake Cookies


4 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups brown sugar
2/3 cup thick sour cream or buttermilk
1 cup candied cherries
2 cans candied fruit and peels – 4 ounces each or 1 cup
Red or green candied cherries for top – optional
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup shortening
2 eggs beaten
1 cup pecans shopped
2 cups dates cut up


Sift flour together with soda and salt. Cream shortening. Add sugar and eggs; beat until light and fluffy. Add sour cream and flour; fold in nuts and cherries, dates and candied fruits. Chill dough, even for a day. Drop teaspoonful about 2″ apart onto lightly greased baking sheet. Top each with cherry half. Bake in moderate oven (360 degrees) 8 to 10 minutes.

Notes: I added some raisins & currants.
Yield: 8 dozen
