Learning safety and leadership

Keni Thomas took time to converse with attendees after his presentation.

More than 100 electric cooperative linemen, supervisors and warehouse personnel from 23 Illinois electric generation and transmission cooperatives recently attended the annual Safety Supervisory Technical Conference held in Decatur, Jan. 30-Feb. 1. The meeting provides line personnel with the newest safety information to help them continually evaluate and improve safety performance.

During the conference, attendees heard Keni Thomas, a former Army staff sergeant deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia with the 3rd Ranger Battalion in 1993. He and his fellow rangers distinguished themselves in an 18-hour fire-fight later recounted in the book and movie Blackhawk Down. Thomas drew from his experiences on the battlefield to inspire others to greatness by stressing the importance of leadership at every level.
