sarah hempen in d.cSarah Hempen from Columbia, Ill. was awarded a scholarship from the Glenn English National Cooperative Leadership Foundation. Hempen represented Monroe County Electric Co-Operative on the 2012 Youth Tour.

Formed in 2013, the foundation honors former National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) CEO Glenn English by awarding scholarships to former Youth Tour participants who have shown a commitment to the seven cooperative principles. English retired in March 2013 after leading the association for 19 years.

“Students are our beacon of hope for the future,” Monroe County Electric President/CEO Alan Wattles said. “For 50 years, America’s electric cooperatives have invested in our students by hosting an annual youth tour in Washington, D.C. – allowing some of our best and brightest students to gain first-hand insight. This scholarship program builds on that investment, and will help propel Sarah to new heights.”
