The Social Security Administration (SSA) has received reports of people in Illinois receiving threatening calls from individuals claiming to be from the SSA. The callers threaten that you will be arrested or faced with legal action if you fail to call a provided phone number or press a specific number on your phone pad. In some cases, the unknown callers switch tactics offering to help individuals activate a suspended Social Security number.
Do not engage with such callers and report any suspicious calls to the Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General by calling
1-800-269-0271.
